Chapter 15

“Kelly.”

She glanced behind her and frowned. She could have sworn she’d heard someone calling her, but there was no one there.

“Kelly,” the voice said again.

This time, she saw his head poking out from behind a pillar. Glancing at Hevak, she pushed her chair back and rushed to the pillar, ducking so as not to block the views of the people sitting behind them.

“What is it? We’re in the middle of the meal.”

And what a meal it was. Kelly didn’t recognize any of the food. At first, she’d almost had a panic attack but then she’d talked sense into herself. She’d had no choice to dig in to the jelly-like purple appetizer, even though she had no idea what it was or whether it might still be alive. What else could she do? The banquet might have been Universal Brides’ idea, but it was still Hevak’s hospitality. And she wouldn’t throw that back in his face.

Shane smiled ingratiatingly. “Do you think you might go change? If we seat you at the opposite side of the room and change the lighting, we can pass it off as a different event.”

Kelly cast a regretful glance back at Hevak. “Shouldn’t I stay with General Hevak? Isn’t that what the viewers want to see?”

Shane nodded. “I’m going to ask him to change too.”

She raised her eyebrow. “I think I’ll stick around to see that.”

Sure enough, when Shane gestured Hevak over, his brow was furrowed and his teeth gritted. Kelly sucked in a breath. When Hevak looked at her, there was gentleness in his eyes that she didn’t see in anyone else. She knew it shouldn’t have, but it gave her a heady rush to see his aggression toward others while he treated her like a queen.

“What is it?”

Shane took a step backward, faltering. “Um, I was wondering if you’d do us a favor and change?”

Hevak glanced down at his decorated military uniform. It was similar to the uniforms back on Earth except for the fabric. Kelly had never seen anything like it. It was a thick boilersuit that shone with every move. It wouldn’t have been out of place at a fancy dress party on Earth, but here everyone dressed like that. Plus, nothing about Hevak screamed fancy dress—he was the most serious person she’d ever met. Except for when he was with her.

“You’d like me to change?” he said in a low voice.

Kelly recognized the dangerous threat in it. Without thinking, she grabbed his arm. He turned and looked back at her, as if to reassure her that he wasn’t going to do anything. In fact, she felt sure she’d seen a glint of something in his eye. Mischief, perhaps. She swallowed.

“Yes, please. It’s for the filming. If we could get you two in a different area of the room, we’ll be able to pass it off as two different nights.”

Kelly filled with panic. All of a sudden, she wondered how much of the truth Hevak really knew. Did he have any idea
